Event: 20200108-031651


Many eyewitnesses in the states of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin reported seeing a fireball at 9:17 PM Central Standard Time (2020 January 8 03:17 UTC). The meteor was also detected by a camera on the roof of a building at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and the data provided by this instrument was combined with the eyewitness reports in deriving the trajectory. The object began to ablate at an altitude of 61 miles above the town of Winona, on the Wisconsin/Minnesota border. Moving southwest at 58,400 miles per hour, the meteoroid traveled 80 miles through the upper atmosphere before ablating 42 miles above the Iowa town of Colwell. Based on the speed and estimated brightness, the object had diameter of 4 inches and weighed about 3 pounds.
