Over two hundred people have filed accounts on the American Meteor Society website regarding a bright fireball seen the evening of July 24, 2022 over middle Texas at 10:23 PM Central Daylight Time (2022 July 25 3:23 UTC). A preliminary analysis of these reports indicates that the fireball was first sighted 47 miles above Highway 77 midway between Hallettsville and Schulenburg. It moved north of west at 29,000 miles per hour, traveling some 65 miles over the Texas countryside before disintegrating 27 miles above Buda in southern Austin. Doppler weather radar indicates that there may be meteorites from this event, which would have landed somewhere between Austin and Lake Travis. More detailed analyses are ongoing; we will update with more information as it becomes available.
