Numerous eyewitnesses in the states of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and Connecticut filed reports of a bright meteor seen at 8:49 PM Eastern Daylight Time on August 28, 2022 (2022 August 29 00:49 UTC). The fireball was also detected by 3 NASA meteor cameras in the region, along with 2 meteor cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network. Analysis of the video data indicates the meteor first became visible 49 miles above Bald Eagle State Park in central Pennsylvania, moving to the southeast at 45,000 miles per hour; it disintegrated 28 miles above the town of Mcalisterville.
At its peak, the fireball - caused by a piece of an asteroid 4 inches in diameter and weighing about a pound - rivaled a crescent moon in brightness.
