Numerous eyewitnesses in the northeastern states and Canada filed reports of two fireballs seen over the region on the night of September 2, 2022. The first, less-reported event occurred over New Jersey at around 8:52 PM EDT (2022 September 3 00:52 UTC).
The second, more widely reported event (described on this webpage) appears to be the brighter of the two fireballs. Seen at 11:29 PM EDT on September 2, 2022 (2022 September 3 03:29 UTC), it was also recorded by 2 meteor cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network. An analysis of the video data shows that this meteor first appeared at an altitude of 51 miles above the town of Grant in New York, moving southeast at 49,000 miles per hour. It disintegrated 29 miles above Salisbury, on the edge of the Ferris Lake Wild Forest. At its peak, the fireball rivaled the quarter Moon in brightness; the video data analysis suggests it was caused by an asteroid fragment around 4 inches in diameter and with a weight of 3 pounds.
