Numerous eyewitnesses in California reported a bright fireball on October 28, 2022 at 9:26 PM Pacific Daylight Time (2022 October 29 4:26 UTC). The fireball was first seen in the Bay Area, at an altitude of 58 miles above Hidden Valley Lake. It moved to the west at a speed of around 70,000 miles per hour, traveling 65 miles through the upper atmosphere before fragmenting 41 miles above Anchor Bay on the California coast. As a member of the Taurid meteor shower, this fireball was produced by pebble-sized cometary debris, originating from Comet Encke or the ancient comet whose breakup produced Encke and the Taurid meteor stream.
