Over 50 accounts of a bright meteor seen on March 6, 2023 at 10:05 PM Eastern Standard Time (2023 March 7 03:05 UTC) have been filed on the American Meteor Society website from eyewitnesses located in the states of Vermont and New Hampshire and the Canadian province of Ontario. The event was also captured by cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network (SOMN) and an analysis of the videos places the first appearance of the fireball 48 miles above Little Birch Lake in southern Ontario. Traveling northwest at 38,700 miles per hour, the object – a small fragment of an asteroid just over half a foot in diameter and weighing about 15 pounds – managed to reach an altitude of 15 miles before disintegrating over the town of Maynooth. There is a possibility some tiny pieces survived to the ground as meteorites. However, the wooded terrain in the region will make it extremely difficult to find any of these – if they exist.
