Over 70 members of the public in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Indiana and Ohio have reported seeing a bright fireball last evening (August 17) at 9:01 PM Eastern Daylight Time. An analysis of their accounts, constrained by videos from 3 publicly accessible cameras, indicates that the meteor first became visible at an altitude of 50 miles above the Kentucky town of Chaplin, moving to the southeast at 40,000 miles per hour. It disintegrated 30 miles above Laurel River Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest, having traveled 84 miles through the upper atmosphere.
