Numerous eyewitnesses in the mid-Atlantic states (North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York) have filed reports on the American Meteor Society’s web site of a bright fireball seen on Friday night (October 13) at 7:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time (13 October 23:36 UTC). An analysis of their accounts places first visibility of the meteor at an altitude of 53 miles above Capitol Heights on the east side of Washington, D.C., moving to the northeast at 53,000 miles per hour. It travelled 44 miles through the atmosphere in just 3 seconds, disintegrating 35 miles above Rossville, Maryland.
This meteor was not associated with a meteor shower, and there is no data at this time indicating that it may have produced meteorites on the ground.
