Many eyewitnesses in the states of Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee have filed reports with the American Meteor Society of a bright fireball seen at 5:04 PM Central Standard Time last evening (January 4, 2024). An analysis of their accounts combined with constraints from 2 publicly available cameras in the area places first visibility of the meteor at an altitude of 49 miles above the small town of Curdsville, Kentucky. Moving north of west at 34,000 miles per hour, the small object producing the fireball manage to travel through 38 miles of Earth atmosphere before disintegrating 29 miles above the Twin Swamps Nature Preserve at the southwest tip of Indiana. It should be noted that this meteor was not part of the currently active Quadrantid meteor shower.
