Hundreds of eyewitnesses in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, have filed reports on the American Meteor Society website of a very bright fireball seen October 5 at 10:45 PM Central Daylight Time. The event was also recorded by several cameras belonging to the NASA Fireball Network and the Southern Ontario Meteor Network. An analysis of the data places first visibility of the meteor at an altitude of 60 miles above Lake Erie near Kelleys Island. Descending at an angle of 30 degrees from the horizontal, it moved east of South at 70,000 miles per hour and managed to travel 72 miles through the upper atmosphere before disintegrating 24 miles above the town of Mohicanville in Ohio. The orbit and light curve suggest that this fireball was produced by piece from a Jupiter family comet approximately 11 inches in diameter with a weight of 66 lbs.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness reports.
