Over 100 eyewitnesses in the states of Montana, Idaho, Washington, Utah, Wyoming, and North Dakota, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, reported the sighting of a fireball, which occurred the morning of November 13 at 6:34 AM Mountain Standard Time. An analysis of their accounts, folding in constraints from a few publicly available videos of the meteor, indicates that it first became visible 54 miles above Warland Peak in the Kootenai National Forest in northwestern Montana. Moving slightly south of east at 57,000 miles per hour, it covered a distance of about 60 miles, passing just north of the town of Kalispell, before disintegrating at an altitude of 36 miles above Pyramid Peak.
The Geostationary Lightning Mappers onboard the GOES-16 and GOES-18 satellites also detected the event. Based on the GLM light curve, this object probably had a diameter of 3 feet and a weight of 3000 lbs.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness reports.
