Many eyewitnesses are filing reports on the American Meteor Society website of a fireball seen on the evening of March 3 at 7:38 PM Eastern Standard Time. The event was also captured by several cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network (SOMN); an analysis of their video data indicates that the meteor was first spotted at an altitude of 60 miles above the Canadian town of Mitchell in southern Ontario. Moving to the south of west at 63,000 miles per hour, the object traveled 110 miles through the upper atmosphere before disintegrating 30 miles above the town of Fostoria in eastern Michigan. The available information indicates that this fireball was produced by an asteroidal fragment weighing about 2 pounds and 4 inches in diameter.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness accounts.
