Well over 100 eyewitnesses in the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas have filed reports of a bright fireball seen at 8:34 PM Central Daylight Time on August 16 (1:33 UTC on August 17). An analysis of these accounts, constrained by a few publicly accessible cameras in the region, provides information about the meteor's trajectory. The meteor first became visible at an altitude of 54 miles above the Arkansas town of Batesville, moving north of west at 56,000 miles per hour. It disintegrated 36 miles above the town of Osage, after traversing 110 miles through the upper atmosphere in just 7 seconds. This fireball was not associated with any currently active meteor shower (like the Perseids).
