Over 100 members of the public in the states of Nevada and California have filed reports on the American Meteor Society’s website pertaining to a fireball observed at 8:12 PM Pacific Daylight Time on the night of August 21 (3:12 on August 22nd UTC). The information in these accounts has been combined with data from publicly accessible cameras in the area to derive the speed and trajectory of the meteor. It first became visible at an altitude of 49 miles above California farmland between the towns of Firebaugh and Kerman, moving slightly south of East at 33,000 miles per hour. It disintegrated 28 miles above Red Fir, on the western side of Sequoia National Park, after having travelled 84 miles through the upper atmosphere. This fireball was a background (sporadic) meteor not associated with any currently active shower.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness information.
