Many eyewitnesses in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois, as well as people in the Canadian province of Ontario, have filed reports on the American Meteor Society website of a bright fireball seen on December 7 at 5:59 PM Eastern Standard Time. An analysis of the information in these accounts has been combined with data from publicly accessible cameras in the region to help characterize this meteor, which was first seen at an altitude of 58 miles above the northern part of Lake Michigan, moving east of south at 73,000 miles per hour. Traveling 61 miles in less than 3 seconds, the object disintegrated 40 miles above Deer Lake, located to the south of Boyne City in Michigan. This fireball was not a member of any active meteor shower and did not produce any meteorites on the ground. We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness reports.
