Over 100 eyewitnesses in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin have filed reports on the American Meteor Society website concerning a bright fireball seen on the evening of February 10 at 11:32 PM Eastern Standard Time. An analysis of these accounts, constrained by data from publicly-accessible cameras in the area, places first visibility of the meteor 48 miles above the Indiana town of Trinity near the Indiana/Ohio border. Moving to the southeast at 29,000 miles per hour, the fireball travelled 48 miles through the atmosphere, finally disintegrated 27 miles above the town of Laura, northwest of Dayton, Ohio. The relatively slow speed suggests that the object producing the meteor was a small fragment of an asteroid.
This fireball was not associated with any active meteor shower.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness reports.
