Well over one hundred eyewitnesses in the states of Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada have filed reports on the American Meteor Society website of a bright fireball seen Monday, March 23, at 6:07 AM Pacific Daylight Time (2026 March 23 13:07 UTC). The event was also bright enough to be detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mappers on the GOES 18 and 19 spacecraft. An analysis of the available data indicates that the meteor was first seen 59 miles above the Sheldon-Hart Antelope Refuge north of the southern Oregon town of Lakeview. Moving northeast at 79,000 miles per hour, the object - a cometary fragment approximately 2 feet in diameter and weighing 450 pounds - disintegrated at an altitude of 42 miles above Can Springs Campground north of Drake Peak.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness reports.
