Multiple eyewitnesses in the states of Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio and the Canadian province of Ontario filed reports on the American Meteor Society website of a bright daylight fireball seen June 19 at 8:14 PM Eastern Daylight Time (2026 June 20 at 00:14 UTC). The meteor was also detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper on the GOES-19 satellite and several cameras in the region. An analysis of all currently available data places first visibility of the meteor at an altitude of 48 miles above northern Lake Huron. The fireball - caused by a small asteroid about 5 feet in diameter and weighing about 5 metric tons - traveled northeast at 28,000 miles per hour before fragmenting 11 miles over Cockburn Island, Ontario, Canada. The fragments likely produced meteorites on the northeast part of the island.
We thank the American Meteor Society for providing the eyewitness accounts.
